Vienna is proving an increasingly popular choice for quant finance master’s hopefuls. The number of applicants for WU’s Master’s in Quantitative Finance has grown from 434 last year to 556 in the latest intake. At the same time, the university has become more selective, extending offers to 130 applicants, against 173 the previous year.

Among recent changes to the programme are new modules on advanced topics in banking, data and text mining, and sustainable finance. The last course is taught by recently hired instructor Rui Duan.

The programme director is Kurt Hornik, who is also a member of the 20-person development team for R, a key programming language used in quantitative finance.

The programme is returning to 30% on-campus teaching, following the 100% remote learning earlier in the Covid-19 pandemic, says programme manager Dragana Pajic, and will require students and staff to show proof of vaccination, negative testing or virus recovery to attend. “Our programme is designed for in-person teaching, which means the rule applies to all students and employees,” she says.

After graduation, students typically take up positions in banking, consulting and asset management. Pajic says the pandemic has not had an effect on the job prospects of WU graduates.
