Crooks scam Shell customers for £1million

LONDON – Oil giant Shell had to suspend chip and pin credit card payments at hundreds of petrol stations around the UK in early May when it was discovered that fraudsters had successfully stolen over £1million from oblivious customers. The thieves had managed to implant skimming devices into the apparently tamper-proof chip and pin readers which then copied the magnetic strip and recorded the pin number of every card that was inserted into the machines.

When the fraud was uncovered Shell suspended chip and pin payments at all 600 of its company-owned petrol stations. A further 400 Shell stations, run as franchises, were unaffected by the fraud.

Eight people were arrested in connection with the scam.
