Establishing the roadmap

Change and transformation often involve stepping into the unknown. Psychological safety provides individuals with the confidence to navigate uncharted territories, take calculated risks, and embrace the challenges ahead.

Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, a theory proposed by psychologist Abraham Maslow, suggests that individuals have different levels of needs that must be satisfied in a hierarchical order, ranging from basic physiological needs to higher-level psychological needs. Employees must feel accepted before they can speak up and take interpersonal risks.

The roadmap is your strategic plan that is designed to move you up this hierarchy. It can provide a high-level overview of the direction your organisation wants to take, and the key milestones it needs to reach along the way to address everything discussed in this book so far.

By creating this roadmap, you will:

  •  
    • align teams and stakeholders around a common vision;

  •  
    • prioritise activities and allocate resources effectively;

  •  
    • identify potential roadblocks and risks early on; and

  •  
    • track progress and adjust plans as needed.

In this chapter, I will focus on the changes required across the enterprise.
