Barclays ATM fault affects millions of consumers

Technical fault incapacitates 1,500 of Barclays cash machines in the south of England for hours

LONDON - A technical hitch left "as many as 5 million" Barclays customers unable to access their online bank accounts or withdraw money from the bank's ATMs on June 17, according to press reports. The fault affected account holders registered for online and telephone banking in the south of England for a number of hours.

Some 1,500 of the bank's 3,500 UK cash machines were also incapacitated between approximately 13:00 BST and 16:00 BST. A disc array fault is believed to have been the cause of the problem, which has now been fixed. Barclays is reported to be "analysing the problem".

The bank was keen to point out that customers had still been able to withdraw cash over the counter.
