Giant US banks outgrew smaller rivals in Q1

Banks over $10 billion in size also saw Tier 1 leverage ratios fall furthest

US banks over $10 billion in size increased assets by 11.3% in the first quarter, in a growth spurt that was not replicated by their smaller rivals.

Those $3-10 billion in size expanded assets by 8.5%, and those $1-3 billion by 8.1%, roughly in line with their Q4 2019 growth rates. The biggest banks swelled 9.3% in Q4 2019 and 7.1% in Q1 2019, making last quarter’s growth rate exceptional.

Of the 123 largest banks, those in the 95th percentile grew as much as 41.79%.
