EU derivatives market adds €55 trillion in 2017

Interest rate products account for 69% of gross notionals

European derivatives gross notionals grew to €660 trillion in 2017, a 9% increase year-on-year, a report by the European Securities and Markets Authority (Esma) shows.

Interest rate derivatives notionals contributed most to the overall increase, rising €81 trillion (21%) to €459 trillion. Equity derivatives swelled 33%, to €36 trillion from €27 trillion, and commodity derivatives 118%, to €24 trillion from €11 trillion.

Currency derivatives dropped 32% over the year, to €77 trillion from €113
