Banks and hedge funds are formally linking compensation to employees' risk and compliance track record in an effort to create a stronger risk culture.

Deutsche Bank now factors breaches of risk rules into an individual's year-end performance reviews. "In areas of the business where it's really black and white in terms of behaviour we want to see or don't want to see – such as if a trading business breaches its limits or if a risk officer doesn't attend compliance training – you get red flags
