Thomas Beil

INTRODUCTION

In 2009, as one of the first major European financial institutions, UniCredit Bank AG, as part of UniCredit Group, began to implement risk-management processes aimed at managing reputational risk (RepRisk). Initially, the focus was on setting RepRisk special policies to cover the most important and frequent cases of reputational risk on the business side, such as cases related to weapons finance or nuclear energy. Within the organisational framework of UniCredit Group, these special policies were proposed by the UniCredit Group (Italy) head office. The local implementation at UniCredit Bank in Germany was subject to extensive debate at the management board level. Although, at the time, RepRisk management was not subject to any regulatory requirements, the top management of UniCredit Bank began to pay particular attention to RepRisk-sensitive issues.

Since those days, RepRisk has become an increasingly important topic, not only in terms of protecting the bank’s reputation but also in terms of complying with regulations and requirements that have gradually come into existence and that aspire to ensure the creation and maintenance of a comprehensive system of RepRisk
