StanChart sees no need for Basel III capital

Standard Chartered (StanChart) believes it is already well capitalised and has no plans to react to Basel III proposals by building up more capital.

Standard Chartered, a UK-based bank primarily focused on emerging markets, is not planning to raise further capital in preparation for stricter capital rules that will come into effect when Basel III is rolled out.

Last week, the Group of Governors and Heads of Supervision, the oversight body of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision, released a draft version of the new rules that are set to improve various features of banks' liquidity and capital adequacy ratios, where earlier Basel II
