FDIC chairman seeks international leverage ratio

Bair believes BCBS should consider further capital safeguards.

Despite calls from American banks to dispatch the leverage ratio, the chairman of the FDIC has emphasised that the ratio is vital to safeguard the financial system, both in the US and internationally.

Speaking to the American Bar Association banking law committee, Sheila Bair said that the other US regulators have pledged their support for the controversial ratio, but that the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision (BCBS) should also consider adding additional safeguards.
