Basel Committee conference solidifies support for Pillar I approach

The long-awaited conference on operational risk issues, organised by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervisions' risk management group, helped solidify support among both bankers and international regulators for the inclusion of operational risk in Pillar I, and the feasibility of the advanced measurement approach (AMA).

The conference, titled “Leading edge issues in operational risk measurement”, was held in the Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s conference centre in Manhattan on May 29 and 30. Participants hailed from five continents and consisted primarily of operational risk managers from financial institutions and regulators.

The inclusion of operational risk within Pillar I, which requires a capital charge and far more transparency than Pillar II, has been the subject of continuous debate. Those against
