European Commission's Michel Barnier discusses post-crisis reforms

Michel Barnier received a frosty welcome from UK politicians and press when he took the top job at the European Commission’s internal market directorate in 2009. Four-and-a-half years on, he says Europe’s regulatory architecture is now in much better shape, but there is still a lot of work for his successors to do. By Cécile Sourbes

Michel Barnier, the commissioner for internal market and services at the European Commission (EC), has not forgotten the welcome he received from the UK on being named to the post in October 2009. Before he had even taken office, the former French agriculture minister was being portrayed as an agent in a Parisian plot to hobble the City of London. It's why he refuses to be drawn on the nationality of one of the three commissioners who will replace him after he leaves the EC at the end of October
