Basel II remains cloaked in mystery in US

NEW YORK – The political waters around Basel II remain murky, according to US-based operational risk executives, consultants and software vendors.

While it is clear Basel II has taken something of a back seat at most US firms – several executives report a slowdown in the implementation programme or the redirecting of funding to other, more pressing, compliance projects – it still remains far from certain Basel II will be passed into final regulation in time for banks to hit the current US deadlines.

Some in the industry have even expressed uncertainty as to whether or not Basel II will "happen" in the US at all. And while these pessimists
