Ministers work to disband SFO

The Guardian, a leading UK newspaper, has alleged that ministers are working on proposals to disband the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) and to merge it partially with the larger Serious Organised Crime Office (Soca).

Although the SFO has declined to comment on the allegations, relations between attorney general Lord Goldsmith and SFO director Robert Wardle were strained, even before the SFO's investigation into the BAE Systems contract with Saudi Arabia was quashed by the UK government as a matter of national security.
