US cannot cope with power demand: NERC

Electricity usage in the US is projected to grow more than twice as fast as capacity growth over the next 10 years, NERC has warned in its 2007 long-term reliability assessment. David Watkins reports

The North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) has warned that unless additional resources are brought into service in the US, some areas could fall below their target capacity margins within two or three years.

The report says that peak demand for electricity in the US is forecast to increase by almost 18% (135,000 megawatts (MW)) in the next 10 years – enough energy to power more than 100 million homes on an average day. Yet committed resources to meet demand, including demand
