People: Apra's Wayne Byres named to Basel role

Byres replaces Stefan Walter as Basel Committee secretary-general; UBS rogue trading fall-out claims more senior execs; Maguire takes charge of SwapClear US

Wayne Byres of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision

The Basel Committee on Banking Supervision has appointed Wayne Byres as its next secretary-general. Byres takes over from Stefan Walter, who served in the role from mid-2006 until the end of October (see pages 60–63).

Byres will also assume the chairmanship of the Basel Committee’s policy development group. A spokesperson for the Bank for International Settlements, where the committee is based, says no start date had been agreed, but Byres is expected to take up his position before the end of
