Our 15th anniversary profile series continues as Roderick Bruce talks with Benoît de Vitry, head of commodities at Barclays Capital, about his memories of the past 15 years and thoughts on the future

What were you doing in 1994?

I was running the US natural gas desk at Merrill Lynch in New York. It was around that time that the gas market really took off. It was a young and exciting market, and it's even more volatile than crude, so it has always been an interesting contract to trade.

I'm sure 500 people claim it too, but in 1990 I traded the first contract in the first minute of the Nymex Henry Hub futures. I just wanted to trade, I didn't care whether I bought or sold!
