Swiss Re to launch emissions desk

Global reinsurance firm Swiss Re will set up an emissions desk in within a month, says Chris Walker, New York-based managing director of the greenhouse gas risk solutions team at the company.

The New York-based desk will cover SO2, NOx and CO2 emissions, he told Energy Risk. Swiss Re’s existing emissions team will work closely with the weather team, and has no plans to make new emissions hires.

Swiss Re has not decided the kind of emissions business it will carry out, says Walker, but it would most likely involve trading on its own behalf and structuring deals for customers, similar to the company’s weather market activity.
