How should banks go about gathering and managing their operational risk data? There’s a fast-growing queue of vendors and industry organisations offering "solutions" to this new problem. But practitioners trying to develop bank strategy say the way forward is far from clear.

Harry Yamamoto, a senior risk manager at Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi (BTM) in New York, says that BTM already collects some information that might prove useful in assessing operational risk -- records of legal disputes
