Fortis appoints new head of global markets

Fortis, the Belgium-based banking and bancassurance firm, has appointed a new head of global markets.

Robert Scharfe will take over the role immediately from the departing René Myncke. He will report to Filip Dierckx, chief executive of the merchant banking division.

Scharfe started his banking career with Banque Générale de Luxembourg before joining Fortis in 1977. He is currently head of the institutional banking and funds department within merchant banking.

As head of global markets, he will be responsible for trading activities operating out of the US, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore.
