In a mind-blowing month for operational mishap, February’s most momentous loss was the result of a sophisticated $1.42 billion cyber attack by North Korean hackers on crypto exchange Bybit – a theft said to be the largest in history.

The hack was initially reported on February 21, 2025, with a loss to Bybit of approximately $1.46 billion in crypto assets. On February 23, the exchange announced it had recovered $42.9 million, bringing its total loss to $1.42 billion.
