Champion of using AI and game theory in investing risk management joins US public fund

Machine learning expert Joseph Simonian has taken on a new role at the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (Calpers), the US’s largest defined benefit public pension fund.

Simonian, a former quant research head at Natixis Investment Management, will oversee equity portfolio design, applied equity research, portfolio attribution and risk management efforts at Calpers in the fund’s investment office. He joined the firm in mid November.
