International sanctions slapped on trade with Russia escalated rapidly after the February 2022 invasion of Ukraine and there is now a bewildering complexity of rules that buyers, sellers and shippers of cargoes need to understand and comply with. They impact countries and companies differently with different rules for different locations, destinations and cargoes. Meanwhile, deceptive shipping practices to evade the sanctions have become more sophisticated.
