Cornell University’s Master in Engineering with Financial Engineering Concentration climbs a place on the leader board in this year’s Risk.net Quant Guide, ranking at eight, after sitting at ninth for two years in a row.

One of the most striking changes to the degree in the past year is the size of the student body. Previously, there were 79 full-timers. The number has shrunk to 25 students for the 2020/21 intake.

International students have also fallen from 67 in the last guide to 15, a drop that is no doubt attributable mainly to the Covid-19 pandemic. But a smaller cohort also means smaller average class sizes, from 45 to 20. All classes will be taught face to face this year.

A new feature of the current programme is a course in Python for finance. Popular topics also include machine learning and big data, says programme director Victoria Averbukh.

She says the pandemic has had no impact on graduate employment prospects. However, post-master’s salaries have decreased slightly, from $101,500 to $99,117 over the past year. The university offers career support including alumni mock interviews, resumé reviews and professional development workshops.
