EU banks cut €56bn of toxic loans

The region’s NPL ratio stood at 3.2%, down 20bp on the previous quarter

European banks offloaded €56.3 billion ($63.2 billion) of soured loans in the last quarter of 2018, bringing the average ratio of non-performing loans across the region to its lowest point since the European Banking Authority started publishing the data in 2014.

Figures from the EBA’s Risk Dashboard show the total amount of NPLs fell to €658 billion at end-December, down 8% quarter-on-quarter, and 19% year-on-year. The bloc’s NPL ratio stood at 3.2%, down 20 basis points on the previous quarter
