HSBC became larger and more deeply enmeshed with other banks in 2018, all of which may lead it to be labelled a greater systemic risk later this year and receive a higher capital surcharge.
The UK bank’s end-2018 global systemically important bank (G-Sib) disclosure, published on April 30, shows it has posted year-on-year increases in eight of the 12 systemic risk indicators used by the Basel Committee to designate too-big-to-fail firms.
