Soured loans set NordLB apart among Landesbanken

Troubled lender has €7 billion of defaulted 'specialised lending' corporate exposures

Struggling German Landesbank NordLB has been in the headlines as it teeters towards either a sale or a wind-down following losses due to non-performing loans (NPLs).  

Credit risk data from the European Banking Authority's (EBA) recent transparency exercise shows that NordLB’s share of soured loans far exceeds that of the other state-owned lenders in the sample, and is only topped by one privatised Landesbank: HSH Nordbank.
