Thai structured product market hampered by regulatory barriers
With an equity market double the size of Singapore's and a rapidly expanding middle class the fundamentals for the Thai structured product market look positive – but volumes have not kept pace with potential demand in part due to regulatory obstacles
On April 30 the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) celebrated its fortieth anniversary but in the 1960s its ill-fated predecessor the Bangkok Stock Exchange (BSE) saw declining volumes leading to its wind-up after just 10 years in business. According to the SET website, "it is generally accepted that the BSE failed to succeed because of a lack of official government support and a limited investor understanding of the equity market."
