Optimism for seeding for hedge funds in 2011

The appetite of institutional investors to allocate to new funds is returning. Seeding in 2011 is expected to become more prevalent but in return for more concessions and better terms for seeders.

The barriers to entry have risen significantly following 2008 and the appetite of large institutional investors to allocate to new funds before they have a significant track record has diminished. Investors with a track record in picking strong new managers raised substantial funds for seeding purposes in 2010 and the pipeline looks encouraging for 2011.

Investors want to see new funds. The average ticket size in 2011 is expected to be larger than in the past years as
