Argentine president Cristina Kirchner shocked the global energy industry last month by announcing plans to nationalise the country’s largest oil and gas firm, YPF, through the expropriation of a majority stake from Spain’s Repsol. Meanwhile, US oil major Chevron has been embroiled in a legal battle with the Brazilian authorities over a relatively small offshore oil spill.
