Renewable energy projects seek investment alternatives

Investment in renewable energy needs to double if EU targets are to be met. With governments and investment banks reining in lending, the market is looking at alternative sources to plug the gaps. Gillian Carr investigates this and the implications of more complexity for risk managers

Renewable energy in Europe is facing some extremely tough challenges in the wake of the financial crisis and the dire straits for eurozone debt. Making up 11.6% of power generation in Europe according to the most recent 2009 European Commission data, renewable power needs to grow by 5% a year in order to hit the European Union’s (EU’s) binding target of 20% of electricity to come from renewables by 2020.
