Video: Birla Sun Life’s Rama Vasantharajan on risk and regulation

Birla Sun Life’s Rama Vasantharajan believes regulation plays a critical role in preventing financial institutions from collapsing. She also discusses enhanced risk management after the global financial crisis as well as the dangers of systemic risk spilling into insurance products linked to investments called Ulips in India.

Rama Vasantharajan, head of compliance and risk management at Birla Sun Life Asset Management in India, says a lack of risk aggregation at both a business and an organisational level resulted in financial institutions being pushed to the brink of failure during the global financial crisis of 2007/2008.

As a result, business stakeholders need to use a ‘top-down' approach, where senior management examines cross-asset correlation between positions, as well as a traditional ‘bottom-up' approach
