Canada pressed to develop inflation market

Current issuance of inflation-linked bonds is too meagre to meet demand from domestic and international investors, say market participants

As inflation expectations creep upwards, dealers and asset managers say the Canadian government should increase its inflation-linked bond issuance programme to further develop the country’s inflation market.

“People are worried about inflation. It’s not one of my fears, personally, but people are worried about it and it’s on their agenda,” observes Simon Lamy, Montreal-based senior vice-president at the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec.

Worries about inflation are partly due to the fact
