European banks relieved after vital stress tests

The European Banking Authority (EBA) will launch Europe-wide bank stress tests tomorrow, with results due in June. The EBA replaced the Committee of European Bank Supervisors (Cebs) at the start of this year – Cebs ran its own stress tests on European banks in 2010, but the results, revealed in July did little to restore faith in the industry's ability to survive a downturn. One of the institutions that received a passing grade – Allied Irish Banks – had to be recapitalised a few months later.
