European Commission floats concept of investment bans in latest Mifid consultation

The European Commission has produced a consultation paper that suggests a basis for banning certain investments, with structured products making their usual appearance in the limelight

European Commission offers consultation document with banning options

The European Commission released a consultation paper on its Review of the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (Mifid) on December 8 that includes some alarming statements on the potential power to ban certain investments, with structured products on prominent display. Consultation on the working document is due to finish on February 2, 2011; in the interim, the member states will be given their first opportunity to introduce their thoughts and suggestions.
