Opinion: Senseless centralisation

In Greek mythology hubris is often quickly followed by Nemesis, the winged goddess of retribution: first comes the pride, then the fall. This is a scenario that should now be familiar to Romano Prodi, the European Commission (EC) president who steered the creation of the euro.

In a speech to the European Parliament a few months after the single currency was set up on January 1, 1999, he said: "For the first time since the fall of the Roman Empire we have the opportunity to unite Europe."
