US budget drops fossil fuel subsidies

US President Barack Obama has used his 2011 budget to call for an end to fossil fuel subsidies, apportioning funds to the clean energy sector instead.

In total, the 2011 budget provides $28.4 billion for the Department of Energy to support scientific innovation, develop clean and secure energy technologies, maintain national security and reduce environmental risk. President Obama submitted the budget to Congress for approval on Monday, February 1.

However, funding has been eliminated “for programmes that provide inefficient fossil fuel subsidies
