Amaranth to pay $7.5 Million fine

The Commodity Futures Trading Exchange (CFTC) announced details today of a court order to settle charges of attempted manipulation of natural gas futures prices against Amaranth Advisors LLC and Amaranth Advisors (Calgary) ULC.

The Amaranth entities have been ordered to pay a $7.5 million civil monetary penalty for attempting to manipulate the price of natural gas futures contracts on the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) on February 24 and April 26, 2006.

The order arises from a CFTC complaint filed on July 25, 2007. The Commission alleged that Amaranth attempted to manipulate the price of Nymex natural gas futures contracts traded on February 24, 2006 and April 26, 2006. The complaint also alleged that in response
