The banking industry could not have bought itself a more high profile, combative or powerful advocate. Angela Knight, the new chairperson of the British Bankers' Association (BBA), is a politician to her fingertips.

She does not welcome the comparison with Margaret Thatcher, but it is unmistakeable. Like Baroness Thatcher, she has a chemistry degree, she sat in parliament for the Conservatives and held political office. But most importantly, she lays into her adversaries with ferocity.
