The great gas price divide

US natural gas prices may be volatile, but is there a real need to worry? Some participants blame the New York Mercantile Exchange for price spikes and worry about the future, while others see no problem with the market’s health. By Paul Lyon

The New York Mercantile Exchange (Nymex) celebrated the two-millionth clearedHenry Hub natural gas swap futures contract last month. But, with prices stillas volatile as anyone can remember, one industry association urged the US CommodityFutures Trading Commission (CFTC) to “urgently review the rules governinghow the Nymex natural gas contact is traded and make necessary changes to protectconsumers”.
