Europe unprepared for emissions trading

The European Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) will not begin on time, and will fail to deliver the promised results, according to a survey by Ernst & Young.

According to the survey, European Emissions Trading - challenge or illusion?, which polled 200 of the largest European companies affected by the scheme, companies are ill prepared internally to trade emissions credits, and have no clear understanding of the long term business management issues involved in its adoption.

Furthermore, just 40% of respondents believe the scheme would result in any planned reduction in emissions.

The survey respondents felt unprepared for what is an imminent
