Dutch minister stakes career on energy liberalisation

The Dutch minister for economic affairs, Laurens Jan Brinkhorst is staking his political future on the success of electricity market liberalisation, claiming he will step down if security of electricity supply is threatened.

"I will take steps if I see these matters are in jeopardy and I will step down as minister if these steps fail,” he said, speaking at an event in Amsterdam, hosted by Dutch energy exchange APX to mark its 5th birthday.

Brinkhorst said additional steps needed to be taken to improve the liquidity of the Dutch electricity market. "Last April, an investigation at the DTe [the Dutch energy regulator] confirmed the general feeling that liquidity of the Dutch electricity market could be better," he
