A slow climb

Equity asset managers are finding it increasingly difficult to outperform the market and are turning to structured products. But take-up is proving gradual, finds Pamela Tang

Structured products in Asia are chiefly a retail and private banking market. In Europe, however, a growing number of institutional investors, such as pension funds and insurance firms, have been investing in capital-protected structured products as part of their strategic asset allocation. There are signs that Asian institutional investors are starting to follow their lead.

A paper published by the Edhec Business School in Paris early in 2005 looked at the role of structured products as an asset
