The derivatives industry has gone through many phases of growth over the past 25 years. From being a small, niche business dominated by a handful of swaps desks in the early 1980s, derivatives had become a major business line by the end of that decade. But there was still room for niche derivatives players, such as Chicago-based options specialist O'Connor and Credit Suisse Financial Products (CSFP).

CSFP was set up by Credit Suisse in 1990 as an AAA-rated, quasi-independent derivatives boutique
