Commodities trading volumes boom in 2007

Trading volumes of commodities on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange’s Globex platform, consisting of New York Mercantile Exchange (Nymex) energy contracts and Comex metals, reached record levels in 2007, as did annual volumes at Atlanta-based IntercontinentalExchange (ICE), according to the exchanges.

Volumes of Nymex energy and metals products traded on the CME Globex platform more than tripled in 2007 to reach an average of 757,000 contracts per day, and grew by 130% in Q4 2007 alone, representing a sixth consecutive quarter of growth.

ICE also enjoyed a record-breaking 2007, with its London-based futures trading wing ICE Futures Europe achieving record exchange-wide annual volume for the 10th consecutive year. Volume increased by 49% to reach 138.5 million contracts during 2007 compared to
