RTS to launch power and weather futures

The futures and options wing of Moscow-based stock exchange Russian Trading System, RTS-FORTS, is planning to launch electricity and weather futures contracts in 2009.

The planned launches will take advantage of the continued liberalisation of the domestic Russian power industry, sparked by the break up of state-backed generator RAO UES.

An electricity spot market, launched in September 2006, is currently operated by Trade System Administrator (TSA), but according to Valery Zvyagin, deputy head of derivatives at RTS, there is strong demand from the power sector for futures contracts for price risk management.
