EEX launches coal futures

Two major exchanges announced the launch of coal futures contracts last month, sparking fears that the competition might cripple liquidity in this fledgling market

The European Energy Exchange (EEX) has listed two new coal futures contracts, as well as offering clearing for OTC coal trades. ICE Futures is set to follow with two similar contracts, pending regulatory approval. EEX launched its two coal futures contracts on May 2, and the first coal contract was traded on the same day: a deal between Barclays Bank and Sempra Energy.
