ECX and Powernext team up on carbon trading

French electricity exchange Powernext and the Amsterdam-based European Climate Exchange (ECX) have agreed to jointly offer carbon futures and spot contracts. The partnership is complimentary, because ECX lists a futures contract and Powernext offers a CO 2 spot contract, Powernext Carbon.

Powernext Carbon launched today: there were eight trades done, for a total of 32,000 tonnes, with a low price of €23.20 ($28.04) a tonne, a high price of €23.45 and a closing price at €23.20. The ECX has listed CO2 futures – called Carbon Financial Instruments – on London’s International Petroleum Exchange since late April.

The joint initiative will enable traders to access all Powernext and ECX contracts on the same screens. The agreement will encompass marketing, technology and a revenue
