Minor metals to make LME debut

Futures contracts for minor metals molybdenum and cobalt will be launched on the London Metal Exchange (LME) in the second half of 2009, the LME has announced today.

Interest in these minor metals has surged recently as a result of a growth in demand combined with highly volatile prices. Traders have been looking for transparent price discovery methods and a method for hedging their risk.

“Minor metals have been discussed by the exchange for some time, and fit with our core products as they are extracted with them,” says Martin Abbott, chief executive of the LME. “The volatility in these markets in recent times has highlighted the need for an exchange traded
