Sasfin punches above its weight

Sasfin Bank caters to the needs of onshore and offshore South African investors with products that adapt to difficult market conditions, characterised by high volatility and brisk market movements. Magda Ali speaks to Carl Isernhinke, chief investment officer, about hybrids, commodities and the attraction of ETFs

Sasfin is a relatively small player in the South African structured products market. The bank hired Carl Isernhinke, previously head of structured products at Absa Capital, as chief investment officer in 2011. "We create structured products in co-operation with banks, choosing our underlying exposures, and we use our own zero-coupon bonds for the capital protection, which allows us to get our own funding," says Isernhinke, who is based in Johannesburg.
